In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukraine has executed one of its largest drone offensives against Russia since the conflict began, according to Russian reports. At least six individuals have reportedly been killed, and a major fire erupted at a distribution warehouse close to Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry announced that it intercepted 1,478 Ukrainian drones over a 24-hour span, marking what it described as the highest number in a single day. However, these figures remain unverified by independent sources.
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, detailed that around 600 drones were aimed at the Moscow region, with 201 allegedly being destroyed. Tragically, one person lost their life in the region. A significant blaze occurred at a Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, approximately 25 miles south of Moscow’s center. The facility, spanning about 250,000 square meters, sustained substantial damage, rendering it inoperative, as reported by Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian officials assert that Wildberries facilities have been targeted due to their alleged use in military logistics.
These attacks underscore Ukraine’s increasing capability to conduct long-range strikes, as Russia continues its reliance on drones and missiles to target Ukrainian urban areas and infrastructure. The conflict’s toll was also felt in Ukraine, where Russian strikes resulted in the deaths of at least seven people, including casualties in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile strike on Kyiv resulted in six injuries and fires, notably at a significant book market where several businesses reportedly lost all their stock.
In a related development, NATO officials confirmed that a Spanish fighter jet, part of a NATO patrol, downed a suspected Russian drone after it breached Romanian airspace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure. He stated that over the past week, Russia launched more than 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine. This intensification of long-range weaponry use by both nations raises the potential for increased casualties and destruction far from the traditional battlefronts.
