In a significant development ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Mexico has stepped in to host Iran’s national football team following the United States’ refusal to accommodate the squad during the tournament. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that FIFA approached Mexico with the request after US authorities declined to host the Iranian team overnight. Despite this, Iran’s group-stage matches are still scheduled to take place in the United States.
As a result of this decision, Iran’s training base has been relocated to Tijuana, Mexico, which is strategically positioned near the US border and close to San Diego, California. FIFA has officially confirmed this adjustment while unveiling the list of team base camp locations for the tournament. Initially, Iran had intended to establish its World Cup headquarters in Tucson, Arizona, but those plans were disrupted due to escalating tensions in the Middle East and concerns related to US sanctions on Iran.
President Sheinbaum assured that Mexico has no reservations about accommodating the Iranian squad and is actively working with FIFA to finalize the logistical details in preparation for the tournament. The shift to Tijuana is also viewed as a means to circumvent potential visa-related challenges, according to Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj. He noted that the team could travel directly to Mexico via Iran Air flights, simplifying their logistical arrangements.
The US State Department has reiterated that Iran remains welcome to participate in the World Cup, although it offered no explanation as to why the Iranian team would not be staying on US soil during the event. This adjustment in hosting arrangements highlights the complexities of international relations and sports diplomacy, as countries navigate geopolitical tensions while preparing for a global sporting event.
The FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, running from June 11 to July 19, marking a significant collaboration among the North American nations to stage one of the world’s most celebrated sporting events.
